archive a project

This may be a dumb question but here goes

Is there any simple method in Dynamite or MAX that allows a user to gather all the files together that were used on a project.

The purpose is to archive a project somewhere which could be successfully retrieved at a later date.

AutoCAD has E-transmit to put all files in a zip file.

I had a case where a project was completed some time ago and after about 12 months I tried to re-use it.

The max scene was originally created on a PC but was saved to a network server when finished. Other files were in various locations on the PC and our network server.

The PC was changed and because the project was inactive it was forgotten about and the PC was rebuilt so subsequently some of the files used were lost, mostly user created road signs.

Can anyone help me

Cheers

David

This is good question…From what I know none of this two products offer such functionality like AutoCAD e-transmit. It is very annoying and let us hope that DVSP team will implement similar function in DVSP 4.0 release. Till now we have to watch out for our project/personal files and keep them in a safe, well guarded place…

Not a dumb question at all.

There certainly is such a method in 3ds Max. Try this:

1) Open the 3ds Max Command Panel if it is not already displayed.
2) In the Command Panel, select the “Utilities” tab.
3) Press the “More” button, and select “Resource Collector” from the list of Utilities.
4) Choose an output path, and set the following options:

Collect Bitmaps: Select this option to gather all the bitmaps used in the scene into the output path

Include MAX File: Select this option to send a copy of the MAX file itself to the output path

Compress Files: Select this option to have everything written to a zip file. Otherwise files will just be written to the output path without being zipped.

Copy/Move: I strongly suggest copying to the output path rather than moving. You generally don’t want to affect your source max data.

Update Materials: Updates the paths to all used maps in the max file to the new output path. This option is not strictly necessary, because Max will always look for the bitmaps in the folder containing the MAX file anyway.

5) Hit Begin to start the copy process!

This should definitely help you. I use this option regularly, and it’s ideal for archiving purposes.

You can also go File - Archive…

But I’d use what Bruce suggested.
