Is it possible to use dynamite with file linked DWG cad files?

We are currently trying to use the file link manager through 3D Studio VIZ in colaboration with VIZ to develop and streamline our work flow, however I have had no success with getting dynamite to work with the files through linking. This is killing the effiency that we are trying to gain through linking throught the file manager as we cannot live update. I think it is on the basis that the dynamite splines that we are trying to use the road marking on need to actually
be local within the scene to work.

Is there a work around at all? It comes up with an error about (mapcord and then an x,y,z coordinate number)

Thanks for the help

I asked John to post this one to the forum for the benefit of other users. It started out as a question he asked to the Support Desk a while ago which turned out to be quite an interesting issue.

Our initial response was that using the DWG File Link Manager with DVSP is not currently possible. The only way to use such content with DVSP Version 3.0 is either to bind the linked DWG file, or to import the DWG in the normal way.

However, a few days later we decided to take a second look at this problem, and came up with a solution for the next release of DVSP. I’m happy to report that DVSP Version 3.1 will now support the DWG File Link Manager. This means that most types of geometry in DVSP can now be assigned to scene content derived from dynamically linked DWG files.

This is quite a significant step forward because it allows (for instance) road markings to be applied to all polylines on a certain layer in a linked DWG file. If that DWG file is then edited in AutoCAD, and perhaps additional polylines are added to that layer - the changes will automatically be reflected in Dynamite VSP - with additional road markings being added to the scene as necessary.
This new feature even allows you to dynamically triangulate closed polylines from a linked DWG file using Dynamite VSP. If you modify the polylines in AutoCAD, the associated triangulated object in 3ds Max scene will update accordingly.
I’d like to thank John for his original support call, which set off a thought process in the office here that has resulted in a useful new feature to be included in Dynamite VSP V3.1.

Good to see this ability has been incorporated.  Incidently my workflow for linemarking is to either linking to a DWG or GENIO and re-applying the linemarking.  I’ve found it pretty damn quick to do.
